...Released...

So, we all know it's going to happen one day, we're going to get released from the best calling ever. I am so sad leave the Primary, but I really can't be selfish any longer. Thank you all for your ideas, input, inspiration, and for following me along on my chorister adventures! These past 3 years have been the best. Seriously. Best of luck to you all!

---------------------------------------------------
Identify the doctrine: Pray in your families unto the Father that your families may be blessed (3 Nephi 18:21).

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35) - use "Reverent Glue" to keep kids in their seats (I had the kids paint their chairs with imaginary glue before they sat down last week, worked like a charm)
  1. Action Song: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man (281), use rhythm sticks
  2. New Song: Seek the Lord Early (108) - Repeat activity from last week, found HERE (I forgot my magnifying glasses at home last week, AND we only had 6 children there, so hoping for a better turnout and a better memory tomorrow!)
    • Put one half of the FLIPCHART picture on the board.
    • Hide the other halves around the room.
    • Explain to children that today we are going to practice our new song called "Seek the Lord Early", but we have the SAME problem. I only have one half of each of the flipchart pictures on the board! I need some detectives to help me SEEK for the missing halves of my flipchart!
    • What does the word SEEK mean? (to find). To help us SEEK for the halves of my flipchart I brought some special detective magnifying glasses! (I found some cheap on Amazon: Plastic Magnifying Glasses) I'm going to give each of you a special detective magnifying glass to help you SEEK while we listen to and sing our new song. (I'll outline the rules of having a magnifying glass, and if any child chooses not to follow the rules, I'll take away their magnifying glass).
    • I'm going to play the song from our CD rather than have our pianist play it. This way the children can hear the words over and over - and it will be something different from me always singing! I will invite them to sing* along if they'd like!
    • Choose one child at a time to SEEK for another half of one of the flip chart pictures. Once they find it, they'll bring it to the board and match it to the missing half. Then I'll choose another child to SEEK for another half.
    • We'll keep going until all the halves have been found.
  3. Action Song: Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam (60)
  4. Review Song: I Am a Child of God (2)
    • Keep rhythm by alternating claps and knee taps
    • Teach them to watch me by pitch leading but holding out certain notes and cutting them off - make it a game!
  5. Reverent Song: The Chapel Doors (156)
Senior Primary (12:05-12:25)
Same as Junior except:
  1. Action Song: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man (281), use rhythm sticks
  2. Articles of Faith Songs: 4th and 9th (124, 128)
    • 9th is new this week!
  3. New Song: Seek the Lord Early (108) - Repeat activity from last week, found HERE
    • Follow similar format as outlined above, except use quarter pieces, not halves hidden around the room. I'll only have one quarter of each flip chart piece on the board.
    • Challenge: SING full pictures, HUM incomplete pictures.
  4. Review Song: The Family is of God (binder)
    • Hand out word strips to the children and teachers.
    • Ask them to put them under the appropriate verse. Ask the pianist to play the song quietly in the background.
    • Sing the song through, one verse at a time and make any corrections necessary.
  5. Reverent Song: The Chapel Doors (156)
Nursery (11:00-11:07am) - Choose 5
  1. Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
  2. Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam
  3. Follow the Prophet (chorus only)
  4. Book of Mormon Stories
  5. Popcorn Popping
  6. Wise Man and the Foolish Man
  7. Families Can Be Together Forever
  8. I Am a Child of God
  9. I Love to See the Temple

Happy Birthday Song: Feliz Cumpleanos (282) verse 2
Reverent Song: Father I Will Reverent Be (29)
Closing Song: Baptism (100)
---------------------------------------------------
Identify the doctrine: I can know the truth through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35)
  1. Action Song: Popcorn Popping (242)
  2. New Song: Seek the Lord Early (108) - Idea found and adapted from HERE.
    Preparation before Singing Time:
    • Cut FLIPCHART (I found this flipchart on Sugardoodle, thanks Kalani, love it!) pictures in half (or have 2 per phrase or something)
    • Put one half on the board
    • Hide the other halves around the room
         During Singing Time:
    • Note: Today is just going to be a brief introduction to the song, so they can hear it and sing it a few times. We'll get into the doctrine more next week. I LOVE this song!
    • Explain to children that today we are going to learn a new song called "Seek the Lord Early", but we have a problem.
    • Choose one child at a time to SEEK for another half of one of the flipchart pictures. Once they find it, they'll bring it to the board and match it to the missing half. Then I'll choose another child to SEEK for another half.
    • We'll keep going until all the halves have been found.
    • *Senior Primary Challenge: SING full pictures, HUM half pictures that haven't been "found" yet. (Because the flipchart has the words on each picture, this will make this part easier for the Sr. Primary, but still tricky for the Jr. Primary.)
  1. Review Song: I Stand All Amazed (H 193)
    • Go over and review the adapted ASL we learned for this song, invite children that feel confident with the signs to come up in the front with me.
  2. Activity Song: Kids Choice
  3. Reverent Song: Father I Will Reverent Be (29)
Senior Primary (12:05-12:25)

      • "Now I have a question for you", (sing the following line): "Oh what do you do in the summertime when all the world is green?" Pause here, ask 1-3 children to share what they do. Invite the rest to share with their neighbor or their teachers what they do.

    • "Be baptized to show obedience" (picture of child being baptized)
    • "As was Jesus Christ, our Lord." (picture of Christ being baptized)
  4. Oh What Do You Do in the Summertime (245) - keep track of who participates/doesn't
    • "I love summertime. It's my favorite time of the year. I like to go the beach, cook hot dogs and hamburgers, and go swimming in a pool."
    • "Now I have a question for you", (sing the following line): "Oh what do you do in the summertime when all the world is green?" Pause here, ask 1-3 children to share what they do. Invite the rest to share with their neighbor or their teachers what they do.
    • "I brought with me today 3 bags with some things in them that are going to help me find out..."(sing the following line) "Oh what do you do in the summertime when all the world is green?"
    • Preparation ahead of time:
      • bag 1 = verse 1: fishing pole, blanket, poster cutout of a cloud
      • bag 2 = verse 2: goggles, fan, piece of rope (rope swing)
      • bag 3 = verse 3: baton (marching band), can of lemonade, telescope
    • Invite reverent children to come and choose an item out of the bag, quickly set them up and explain to them what they'll do when you sing their line in the song (for example, for verse 1 a child will lazily dream on the blanket as another child will "float" the cloud over their head).
    • Invite the children sitting down to sing the question with you, "Oh what do you do in the summertime when all the world is green?" Then sing the first question, pointing at the first child, sing the second question pointing at the second child, etc. Then, pointing back at the children sitting down, sing "Is that what you do? So do I."
    • Repeat for the next 2 verses.

  4. The Family is of God - verses 2-3 review
    • Using word strips, children must organize them under the correct figure (father or mother) and in the right order. To do this, divide the children into 2 groups. The first group must organize the word strips under father or mother on the board while the group sitting down sings those 2 verses. The second group will then organize them in order while the group sitting down sings those 2 verses. If either group finishes before the singing group is finished singing, they are to sit and join in.
    • Father word strips: place, preside, provide, love and teach, the gospel, children, leads in family prayer, to share their love, Father in Heaven
    • Mother word strips: purpose, care, prepare, nurture, strengthen, all her children, she teaches, to obey, to pray, to love, serve, family

June 29, 2014

Opening Song: I Will Follow God's Plan (164)
Welcome Song: Hello Song (260)
Action Songs: Do As I'm Doing (276)
Article of Faith Song: none today
Program Song: I Love to See the Temple (95)
Other Song: Family History - I Am Doing It (94)
Happy Birthday Song: Happy Happy Birthday (284)
Reverent Song: Reverently, Quietly (26)
Closing Song: I Stand All Amazed (Hymn 193)
---------------------------------------------------
Identify the doctrine: Family history work connects me to my ancestors.

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35)
  1. Action Song: Do As I'm Doing (276) - lay action circles (on each circle there is a different action: playing the drums, washing the dishes, riding a bike, etc.) face down on the ground. Invite a reverent child to come choose a circle to do with me up in front. Repeat until all the children have participated (use this to practice/contrast reverence).
  2. Fourth of July Review Activity:
    • Preparation before Sunday:
      • Fold this patriotic paper airplane.
      • Print a copy of this American flag coloring page: (I printed 2 per page, then cut the page in half)
      • Separate out blue and red crayons, enough for your Primary.
      • Make a list of the songs you wish to review, some patriotic songs, and activity songs.
    • Preparation before Primary:
      • Place an American flag coloring page and a red and a blue crayon on the chair of each Primary child before they come into Primary. Write on the board: "Color your flag and write your name on the back. Place it on the board with a magnet."
    • Using name sticks, choose children (as long as they are reverent) to come and throw the paper airplane at one of the flags on the board. Turn over the flag they hit (or get closest to) and say that child's name, then look at your review list (with songs magically matched up with the names on the back of the flags, wink wink) and call out the review/patriotic/action song you'll be singing. In the case that all children don't have a turn, just before time is up, have the remaining children line up and throw the paper airplane at the flags - no singing, just a quick turn at throwing.
  3. Reverent Song: Reverently, Quietly (26)
Senior Primary (12:05-12:25)
  1. Baptism (100) - Verse 2 Introduction:
    • Invite the children to sit on the floor in the front of the room. Show the children the Jesus is Baptized video from the Friend's video archive. Before the video ask the children to listen for why Jesus chose to be baptized.
    • After the video discuss why Jesus was baptized. Be sure to have the kids summarize what happened as well. Tell them that the 2nd verse of the song Baptism talks about what happened in the video - it teaches us why Jesus was baptized.
    • Sing Verse 2 to the children (invite them to sing along with me if they know it).
    • Echo sing the verse (I sing a phrase, they sing it back to me) - teaching the principle as you go. For example:
      • "This verse starts with the answer to a question": To fulfill the law, said Jesus.
      • "This means that Jesus was baptized to follow his Father's commandment to be baptized."
      • When the Baptist questioned why. "The question came from John the Baptist, but here we just call him 'the Baptist.'"
      • And to enter with my Father in the kingdom up on High. "This is the promise we all have if we are baptized and keep our covenants, that we too will live with our Heavenly Father again."
  2. Choose the Right Bear/Hot and Cold - a few of the children didn't get a turn last week, so we will do 2 more rounds of this to 2 of the review songs before moving on to the 4th of July Review Activity. (I have a beanie baby bear with a CTR on his belly, hence "Choose the Right Bear". We hide him and play the hot/cold singing game. I introduced the game by saying that Choose the Right Bear loves to play hide and seek but he is a terrible "hider", so we have to help him hide. Kids ate it up.)
  3. 4th of July Activity - as explained above.
Nursery (11:00-11:07am) - Choose 5
  1. Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
  2. Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam

  1. Same as Junior except:

Happy Birthday Song: Happy Happy Birthday (284)
Reverent Song: Reverently, Quietly (26)
Closing Song: I Will Follow God's Plan (164)
---------------------------------------------------
Identify the doctrine: Temples make it possible for families to be together forever.

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35)
  1. Action Song: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man (283) using Rhythm Sticks.
  2. Articles of Faith Songs: 2nd - use number posters (in sheet protectors).
  3. I Love to See the Temple (95)
    • Sing through verse 1, listen for and fix any problem areas.
    • Teach verse 2: Display a picture of a temple hidden behind eight pieces of paper. On each piece of paper, write or draw one of the following: a heart, an open door, the word covenant, the word obey, the words holy place, the word sealed, a picture of a child, and a picture of a family. Tell the children that these are clues to a song. Invite them to listen carefully as you sing one line of the song. Ask them which clue goes with that line, and invite a child to remove that piece of paper. Sing the line again with the children, and explain what it means. You may invite them to do an action related to the line. Repeat with each line of the song. When you have uncovered the picture, sing the entire song with the actions. Tell the children that they can prepare now to be worthy to go to the temple when they are older and that doing so will bring them closer to Jesus Christ. (taken from October 2010 Primary Outline)
    • I will most likely come up with my own clipart song clues since I'd like to use all pictures for the sake of my Junior Primary, but until then, here's an idea for the Song Clues.
  4. Another Action Song: Kids' Choice.
  5. Father's Day Medley
    • Sing through the medley, listening for any trouble spots - fix them.
    • Performance ready time: have children stand to sing. Review what a "Super Singer" is (using poster: eyes on me, smiling, singing, hands at side, holding still, etc.). While the children sing I watch for Super Singers and invite them to come sing in the front of the room by gently tapping them on the shoulder as I walk around. The idea is to have ALL the children up in front by the end of the song. I repeat this process until we achieve that. (and I'm careful not to single anyone out, I'm aware of my kids' individual needs/circumstances).
  6. Reverent Song: Reverently, Quietly (26)
Senior Primary (12:05-12:25)
  1. Same as Junior except:
    • Sing the 6th and teach the 7th Article of Faith using pitch leading, go over tricky words.

Identify the doctrine: The prophets in the scriptures are examples to my family.

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35) - Review
  1. Action Songs: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man - using Rhythm Sticks
    • Tried this last week and the kids LOVED it. Hand out the sticks to each child and remind them they are only to tap their sticks together (not hit themselves, their neighbors, their chairs, or their teachers - if they do, you will take away their sticks - I gave them back their sticks after 1 minute). To make sure they will listen, I had them tap their sticks quickly on "go" and hold them still at "stop". We practiced this a few times before singing.
    • We kept the beat during the verse, or kept the rhythm of the song during the verses. We tapped the sticks quickly starting them high and lowering them while singing "the rains came down", then tapped them slowly moving them up while singing "and the floods came up". You can improvise, it's just to get the kids moving and interacting with the beat, the rhythm and the sticks.
  2. Follow the Prophet - teach the children the chorus by first marching in the place, then marching around the room. Sing a few times, giving the children turns to be the leader - just as we follow the leader, we are to follow the prophet.
  3. Book of Mormon Stories - sing using the hand actions.
  4. I Love to See the Temple
  5. Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam - remind children to sit in the seats and jump up.
  6. The Family is of God - Verse 1
  7. Reverent Song: The Chapel Doors (156) - sing as the kids are dismissed to class.
Senior Primary (12:05-12:25)
  1. Action Songs: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man - using Rhythm Sticks (use same process as above)
  2. Articles of Faith Song: 5 - Pitch lead, clap tricky rhythms. 6 - new this week, sing to them once, invite them to sing with you once, pitch lead.
  3. Review Day: Using the "How to Sing" folder (it's red, in my flipchart box), use the sticks or ideas in the folder to review the following songs:
    • He Sent His Son
    • I Stand All Amazed
    • The Family is Of God

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Junior Primary/Senior Primary

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35) - Review
  1. Action Song: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (275)
  2. Articles of Faith Songs: 1 (122)
  3. Did Jesus Really Live Again (64)
    • Review Activity: Hide pictures under chairs. Have children look for pictures as the pianist plays softly.
    • Sing the song a verse at a time and ask the children to listen for the part of the song their picture is about.
    • Invite the child with the corresponding picture to come put it on the poster (on the appropriate velcro dot). When all the pictures are on the poster, sing the song again (verses 1-3) and flip the poster over for the last phrase.
    • Practice performance mode for next week!
  4. The Family is of God (outline) -- lesson plan adapted from Pat Graham
    • Attention getter: Make a trumpet with hands---da-da-da-daa-da-daa. Show "The Family: A Proclamation to the World." What is the big word that means a big public annoucement? (proclamation). We want to proclaim, or tell, the world how important families are. The song's words come from this document. Listen while I sing the chorus to find out one way God shares His loves for us.
    • Sing the Chorus and ask: How does God share His love? (by giving us families)
    • Invite the children to stand to use movement as we sing the chorus:
      • "God gave us families" --- swing arms right, left, right, left on the beat
      • "to help us become what He wants us to be" --- pat legs twice, clap twice, pat legs twice, clap twice (starting on "help")
      • "This is how He shares His love" --- swing arms right, left, right, left on the beat
      • "For the family is of" --- pat legs twice, clap twice, pat legs twice, clap twice
      • "God" --- extend arms out to sides palms up (think, ta-da!) and then palms down to "cut off" the final "d"
    • Repeat movement exercise a couple times.
    • Teach Verse 1 using simplified ASL:
  5. Reverent Song: The Chapel Doors (156) - sing as the kids are dismissed to class.
Senior Primary (12:05-12:25)
  1. Action Song: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (275)
  2. Articles of Faith Song: 5 - new this week. Pitch lead, clap tricky rhythms.
  3. Did Jesus Really Live Again (64) - 6 minutes
    • Review Activity: hand out pictures to each child. Sing the song and when the children hear their part of the song, they can come up and put it on the poster - but they have to keep singing!
    • Sing the song all the way through (verses 1-3) and flip the poster over at the last phrase.
  4. The Family is of God (outline) --- use simplified ASL from the video above while singing/teaching to Sr. Primary. No need to specifically teach signs, they catch on quickly. --- lesson plan from Pat Graham
(by giving us families) Why did God give us families? (to help us become what He wants us to be)
    • What words are on this melody? Hum and pitch lead "for the fam'ly is of God." Invite children to sing/lead with you as many times until all are secure.
    • Sing the chorus and direct the final "d".
    • Verse 1: (ask the question before singing the verse to the children - you'll sing it 3 times)
      • Who belongs to our Father in Heaven's family? (me, you, all others)
      • How did He send us to earth? (through birth)
      • Why did He send us to earth? (to live and learn here in families)
    • Invite children to sing verse 1 and the chorus.

Listening and Singing Experiences:

Junior Primary/Senior Primary

Singing Time:

Junior Primary (11:15-11:35)
  1. Action Song: Book of Mormon Stories (118)
  2. Articles of Faith Song: 1 (122).
  3. I Stand All Amazed (Hymn 193) - Review Verse 1 and Chorus together. Teach sign language for chorus. References: Janelle's lesson plan on Sugardoodle.net, Kami's Simplified ASL.
    • What is our new song about? What is the name of our song? Let's sing through verse 1 using our sign language.

    • Now let's learn the signs for the chorus. Teach one phrase at a time, then sing all the way through.
  4. Action Song: If You're Happy (266)
  5. Did Jesus Really Live Again (64) - verse 2
    • Draw the question mark and 3 on the board and post the picture of Christ and Mary at the Tomb. Sing through verse 1.
    • Verse 2 sounds a lot the same. It has a question and an answer too. I'm going to sing it to you. When you hear the question, lift up your question stick. When you hear the answer, lift up your answer stick. (popsicle sticks with construction paper with a question mark and an exclamation point).
    • What was the question? (Did Jesus come to those He loved?) The answer? (Yes, people touched His feet). Draw a question mark and feet.
    • The next part of the song tells us 2 things that Jesus ate - what were they? (fish and honeycomb). Draw a fish and honeycomb on the board (or invite a child to come draw).
    • Sing the song all the way through (verses 1-2)
  6. Reverent Song: Father, I Will Reverent Be - sing as the kids are dismissed to class.

    • Sing the song through using the simplified ASL in the video posted above.
    • Do you remember last week we used Melody Maps to sing I Will Follow God's Plan? This week I'm going to show you where to find the melody in the hymnbook. Pass out hymnbooks. Using enlarged print of the song on the board, show the children how to follow "dot-to-dot" or note to note from left to right, just `like we did on the Melody Map.When you get to the bottom of the page, show them how to go to the top of the next page. (Sing slowly as you do this)
  4. Did Jesus Really Live Again (64) - verse 2-3
    • Draw the question mark and 3 on the board and post the picture of Christ and Mary at the Tomb. Sing through verse 1.
    • Verse 2 follows a similar pattern. Question, answer, and then it teaches us something. I'm going to sing it to you. When you hear the question, stand up. When you hear the answer, sit down.
    • What was the question? (Did Jesus come to those He loved?) The answer? (Yes, people touched His feet). Invite someone to come and draw a question mark and feet in the corresponding columns.
    • The next part of the song tells us 2 things that Jesus ate - what were they? (fish and honeycomb). Invite someone to come draw a fish and honeycomb on the board.
    • Sing the song all the way through (verses 1-2)
    • Verse 3 switches the pattern. First it teaches us something, then the question, and finally the answer. Sing the verse to the children then draw in the columns (nails/spear, question mark, YES.
