Program Song: Choose the Right (p239 in Hymnbook)

Review Songs: As a Child of God (in 2012 Primary Outline)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Identify the doctrine: When we choose the right, Heavenly Father will bless us. We should follow the prophet and the scriptures to receive wisdom. We should follow the Holy Ghost.

Help children understand it:
  1. Attention Getter:
    • Choose the Right game. Give kids situations from home, and ask them how they would choose the right. Specify to the older kids that I am looking for serious answers only. Ask Vincent to read the situations (hoping to reduce the amount of "silly" answers).
  2. Instruction:
    • (will be taught during the listening and singing experiences)
  3. Listening and Singing Experiences: (adapted from here)
    • Quick note: when I introduce a new picture stick, place an 8 1/2 x 11 copy of it on the blackboard. Point to it during the song as needed to help the kids know when to lift their sticks.
    • Hand out the CTR Picture Sticks to the Sunbeams, and have them lift their stick high every time I sing "Choose the Right". Sing the chorus to the kids. Have the kids guess how many times we sing that phrase and then sing it again and have the CTR class count.
    • Next, pull out the Light Bulb Picture Sticks and give them to the CTR class. Sing the chorus again and ask them what phrase we could use them for - have them lift their sticks high when they hear the phrase. Identify the phrase and talk about it. With the Senior Primary ask questions like "What kind of light are we talking about?"
    • Next, pull out the Book of Mormon, Prophet, and Temple Picture Sticks. Hand these out to the CTR class as well. (I want to keep it simple for the Sunbeams this week). Explain that these picture sticks all go with the same phrase. Sing the chorus again and have the kids listen for the phrase they might go with, have them lift their sticks high if they hear the phrase ("let wisdom mark the way before"). With the Junior Primary explain that having wisdom means we have knowledge and we know how to use it to choose the right. We can learn wisdom by these three things - reading the scriptures, listening to the prophet, and going to the temple. In this song we learn that wisdom will show us the way to go, or "mark the way before".  For the Senior Primary ask, "Why did I choose these pictures to represent "wisdom"? Hopefully this will spur discussion.
    • Next pull out Jesus with the Children Picture Sticks. Hand these out to the teachers. Sing the song again, and have the teachers lift their sticks when they hear the phrase they go with ("God will bless you evermore"). Identify the phrase and talk about it. This is a picture of Jesus blessing the children. When we choose the right, He will also bless us!
    • Sing the song all the way through using all of the picture sticks.
    • Next, review As a Child of God using the poster. Just verse 1 this week.
Help them apply it in their lives:

Challenge the kids to find new ways to choose the right this week.

Songs of the Heart: (If there is time) Ask the teachers and leaders to write down their Songs of the Heart while we sing some of the kids Songs of the Heart. I will leave hearts with teachers to use during class time if the kids have more songs they wish to add.

  1. I found this review idea and don't want to forget it!

Then I played a game I called 'choose the right color'. It is an adaptation of something I saw on someone's blog. I put a bunch of different colored refrigerator magnets into a paper bag. There were 5 different colors and about 3 or 4 of each color in the bag. I asked a super singer to reach in the bag and 'choose the red' and if they did pull out a red then they got to choose a song to sing. If they pulled out the wrong color, then we sang through CTR again. Pulling out the right color is nearly impossible so it was a really fun way of repeating the verse over and over. I kept it very fast paced and didn't allow much time to pass between ending the a song and choosing a new color. For us-the 'right color' was only pulled on the very last chance so it was super fun. The children were loving the song by the time we were done." (Idea shared by Kim Zirker / Primary Music Yahoo Group)

  2. Today went well. There were only 4 kids in the Senior Primary (1 visitor and 1 who rarely comes), so I will most likely use a similar lesson plan for next week. With the Junior Primary, we only learned the phrases "choose the right" and "in its light". They are very quiet and unsure of singing still. Need to look for additional ways to boost their confidence! I will continue this same lesson plan next week. Use the 8 1/2 x 11 pictures more with Jr. Primary.

Another thought - I think I will only teach verse 1 to the Jr. Primary. I will teach verses 1 and 3 to the Sr. Primary and ask a small group to sing verse 2. Still going to muse over that though.

Didn't have time to review today. I need to manage time better by shortening the time I spend on the attention getter. Wiggle songs are important for the Jr. Primary since they stay in their seats for the entire second block; not as important for the Sr. Primary since they come from a break after class.

I like having the Sr. Primary sing as the Jr. Primary comes in; however, I feel like my time is cut short when classes come in early. I want to encourage the teachers and classes to sing along with the piano as they wait for Opening Exercises/Sharing Time/Closing exercises to start. Talk to Emily and Primary presidency.

Had my first music time in nursery today. Start music time by singing "The More We Get Together". After, I went over the chorus to I Am a Child of God using hands to keep the beat and motions to indicate the tune going high. Next week, repeat same lesson with I Am a Child of God. I also sang Popcorn Popping with them. There were 2 kids that seemed to know it. Hand motions worked well with all kids but the 3 youngest.
